Roof to be raised on Hospice raffle house

Abel Construction of Daniels and Beckley Crane & Construction are using the last stretch of good weather for a good cause, roofing the 1,831-square-foot home Hospice of Southern West Virginia will give away via drawing to benefit Bowers Hospice House.

Project managers Tony Culicerto and Ed Snuffer had as their immediate goal drying-in the home before the upcoming winter months, when intense interior construction will begin.

“Trusses and roof sheeting are going up (Monday), then shingles will come next,” Snuffer said. “Hopefully, by the first of November, we’ll have it totally under roof and can start with the electrical and plumbing.”

Snuffer believes the enthusiasm and support surrounding the Hospice raffle house comes in part because most people have had experience dealing with death, whether as friends or family, and they want to support Hospice.

“I almost think Hospice means more to the family than they do the patient. I mean, a (terminally ill) patient is going to die with or without Hospice, but it keeps the family going and keeps supporting them even when the patient passes on,” he says.

Hospice of Southern West Virginia is relying upon ticket sales to pay off the balance owed on the current mortgage for its inpatient facility, Bowers Hospice House. The residential home-to-be sits on 1.29 acres within Stone Creek subdivision off 4-H Lake Road in Daniels, on property donated by Discount Tile of Beckley.

No more than 4,000 tickets will be sold, leaving those who take a chance on the home with a one in 4,000 chance of winning. Tickets are selling for $100 each and are available at Discount Tile of Beckley; Shoney’s of Beckley; Means Lumber; First Peoples’ Bank of MacArthur, Pineville and Mullens; First Community Bank of Beckley, Brookshire and Daniels; and Bowers Hospice House.

The drawing for the home is planned for no later than Sept. 6, 2010.
